NHS employers recruit on values as well as skills. NHS Employers describes values based recruitment as an approach that helps find people whose personal values match those of the organisation, and says it can use values based interviewing techniques such as role play and written responses to scenarios. The values are those of the NHS Constitution: working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and everyone counts.

Nursing and midwifery panels also work to professional standards. The NMC Code is structured around four themes: prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety, and promote professionalism and trust. Midwives are also assessed against the NMC's standards of proficiency for midwives. Newly registered nurses typically start at Band 5, and the national nursing and midwifery job profiles were revised in 2025, so read the person specification for the band you are applying for.
